Assessment Centers

Description of Service
We send a team to your site and administer a complete Assessment Center,
score the exercises and report the results. Exercises include:
Oral Presentation
Candidates prepare then deliver short talks on assigned topics.
These might be instructing the staff of a nursing home on the safe use of fire
extinguishers, or a talk to kids about Exit Drills in the Home, etc.
Written Presentation
Candidates prepare a memo, or meeting agenda, or perhaps a press release, per
instructions. These instructions might be memos from the chief and HR, or letters to
the editor in the local paper, or complaints from another city department head, etc.
Role Play
Candidates interact with a subordinate with some hidden problem requiring interpersonal
skills, supervisory skill, knowledge of department policy, etc. The subordinate
might be starting to miss work, or be under some suspicion of improper activity, etc.
Alternatively, candidate may be going over a difficult evaluation with a
role-player, something like that.
Tactical Scenario
Candidates respond to real-time, unfolding, difficult tactical scenarios which test
their ability to think on their feet. Such scenarios might include a nursing home
fire, bomb incident, hazmat spill, etc., often with one or more of the usual resources not
available.
Group Problem Solve
Candidates work together on an assigned problem or to prepare an agenda, or plan a
public relations event. Often, the written exercise above will form the foundation
of this common exercise.
Structured Interview Questions
Candidates all respond to a uniform set of questions such as why they want this
promotion, or what they view as contemporary issues in the fire service, etc.
Procedure
Customers select a date of administration, chooses which exercises they want, discuss
with us exactly what it is they are looking for in their candidates, then we do the rest.
Our team will arrive the night before testing begins and stay the night of the last
day. A team can test up to 8 candidates for the same rank per day. We can send
multiple teams. Each team needs three rooms which can be in a fire station, school,
hotel, etc., in which to condut the exercises. We arrange travel and lodging for the
examiners.
Candidates receive orientation packets and time to read them on the first day, as well
as number badges. Both candidates and examiners remain anonymous to each other.
They are then given time to prepare for the different events and time to conduct
them.
After all candidates are through, our team sends all materials to the home office for
scoring. The customer receives a complete report within three business days.
